Organic Seeds – What You Should Know About Them

Organic seeds, as their name suggests, are seeds that are acquired in organic ways. This means, the seeds are obtained by totally natural processes, without using any chemical ingredients anywhere in their production. Seeds are obtained from fruits; so, the definition extends to the fruits where the seeds are obtained from as well. The fruits need to be organic as well. In short, seeds that are obtained from organic fruits and vegetables are considered to be organic seeds.

In addition, it is not just about keeping the seeds away from synthetic materials. In producing organic seeds, it is also important that the seeds should not be tampered genetically in any way. A lot of present-day manufacturers are trying out genetic engineering methods to produce high yielding varieties of seeds. However, organic seed developers and organic farming proponents do not use such genetically engineered or genetically modified seeds.

The NOP (National Organic Program) which delineates various rules for organic farming says that only organic seeds should be used if the farming methods are meant to be organic. This might be a stringent rule, but it preserves the natural quality of the plants totally. Seeds are known to introduce chemicals they were subjected to into the plants that germinate from them. Hence, if the seeds themselves are kept organic, there is a strong likelihood that the plants emerging from them will be healthier as well.

In organic farming and even organic gardening that is done usually at a household level, the demand is thus for organic seeds. Today, organic varieties of almost all commonly available seeds are available. These are seeds that were never exposed to any kind of chemical or synthetic in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, germicides and insecticides, etc. These seed packets are readily available in nurseries. Once you buy them, you can simply sow these seeds and get ready for your organic farms. But, of course, simply using organic seeds doesn’t make your farming practices organic. There are several other aspects to it, but sowing organic seeds is one of the main precursors where organic farming is concerned.

Organic seeds have more advantages than you may think about. Here’s a list of them:-

  1. With organic seeds, you get tastier fruits and vegetables. This is because chemicals can interfere with the natural balance of the foods and spoil their taste. However, when the seeds are organic and the process is kept organic, the taste of the food is preserved to a great extent.
  2. You are doing your bit for the environment. When you are using organic seeds, you are ensuring that the environmental footprint isn’t too huge. This footprint is caused due to water conservation and soil conservation, which is contributed for by the chemicals present in the seeds. But, by using organic seeds, this is curtailed.

Hence, organic seeds aren’t just an alternative anymore; they are a necessity. Some areas of the world have made their usage compulsory. You should think about the benefits and look for places where you could get these environmentally-beneficial farming resources from.
